2009 Candidate Questionnaire

Friends of Horseshoe Farm posed the following four questions to all the candidates for Mayor and City Council in Raleigh in this election:

  1. Are you aware that Horseshoe Farm Park has been designated as a Regionally Significant Natural Heritage Area by the State Natural Heritage Program office?
  2. Are you aware of the current City Council's decisions to preserve this park as an environmental and arts education nature park? Do you support their decisions and will you pledge to protect the park as the current City Council has done? Why or why not?
  3. Do you feel that development of active recreation facilities for organized sports program activities would be appropriate at Horseshoe Farm? Why or why not?
  4. How important do you consider public input to be when planning new City of Raleigh parks? What is the best method for securing this input and how much weight should this input be given in the final park plans?

You can read the candidates' responses here.

January 8: Cause for Celebration!

On January 8, 2008, the Raleigh City Council unanimously approved the master plan for Horseshoe Farm that was unanimously recommended by the citizen master planning committee with a few minor changes. This is great cause for celebration because this plan represents the desires of the overwhelming majority of people who provided feedback during this process. It also respects the extraordinary natural resources at the park and will ensure that the public will be able to enjoy the unusual and much sought after natural experience this park affords.

Read all about it in the City Council minutes here.

We encourage you to write a letter to the City Council members thanking them for taking this action to protect this resource and provide the template for an outstanding environmental education and arts experience on the Neuse River.

Friends of Horseshoe Farm will begin working with City Parks staff on wildlife habitat enhancements for the park soon. If you would like to volunteer to assist in this effort, please email info@horseshoefarm.org.

A heartfelt thank you to all the Friends who helped make our dream a reality. If you have any feedback or information to share, we'd be happy to hear from you!
